Student Research Conference 5-20-09

GSU will hold its 15th Annual Student Research Conference on Wednesday, May 20, 2009.  Please plan and start preparing for this conference.

Deadline: Registration and Abstract Submission Deadline: Friday, April 11, 2009

Conference: The conference will provide students an opportunity to present their research work before an audience of their peers, and will provide a forum to highlight research accomplishments at GSU. All the presentations will be made by students only. All the previous conferences had a full house with back to back presentations from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. Students, please think about presenting your research and other scholarly work in this conference.

Registration: All attendees are required to register using the registration form. Students are encouraged to attend the conference even if they are not presenting any paper. Faculty members, invite your students to attend the conference and join for lunch. However, students must be registered before the deadline of April 11, 2009.

There is no registration fee.

Program: The conference will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will have morning and afternoon podium presentations. The posters will be displayed right after the lunch, which will be provided to all registrants. Certificates of Merit will be awarded to all student participants.

Conference Format: Students may present their work in podium presentation or poster presentation formats. The podium presentations will be 15 minutes in duration followed by 5 minutes question/answer session. In the poster presentations students will display their work in small posters which will cover an area of 4′ x 3′.

Conference Proceedings: . All abstracts will be published in the conference proceedings.

Faculty Candidate Community Presentations

The search committee for the Assistant/Associate Professor of Education and Coordinator, Alternative Certification Program position has invited two candidates to campus for interviews. A part of the interview process for the position candidates is a presentation to the university community. The schedule for those presentations is as follows:

  • Rudy Puente will present on “Alternative Routes to Teacher Certification: Considerations for the Continued Success of Future Teacher Candidates in High Needs Schools” on Thursday, February 26, 2009 from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. in room D34160.
  • Kimberly Garrett will present on “Effective Urban Teacher Preparation: Moving from Alternative to Progressive Certification Programs” on Friday, February 27, 2009 from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. in room D34160.

Faculty, staff, students, and interested community members are invited to these presentation.

Basic Skills Computer-based Testing!

ANNOUNCEMENT: Basic Skills Computer-based Testing

The ICTS Basic Skills test is now offered on computer in addition to the regularly scheduled paper-based administrations. Basic Skills computer-based testing (CBT) is available during select five or six-day testing windows at Pearson Professional Centers.

There are Pearson Professional Centers in the following Illinois locations:

* Chicago (Financial District)
* Chicago (La Salle) (March 2009 only)
* Chicago (Wacker Drive)
* Marion
* Peoria
* Schaumburg (Chicago NW)
* Springfield

There are also additional Pearson Professional Centers in neighboring states, including the following locations:

* Evansville, IN
* Terre Haute, IN
* Merrillville, IN
* St. Louis, MO (2 centers)
* Davenport, IA
* Kenosha, WI

For the remainder of the 2008-2009 program year, CBT testing windows for Basic Skills will occur as follows (excluding Sundays):

Alum Lanee Walls Appointed Superintendent

Alumni Lanee Walls was named the new superintendent for schools for the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice. Dr. Walls brings to the youth prison school district her experience, dedication, compassion for children, and the necessary leadership skills to help the department reach its goal of providing the best education services possible. Dr. Walls received her master’s degree in Education Administration from in 2002. Most recently, she was principal of Wilson School in Chicago Heights and previously was a school psychologist for the Illinois Department of Corrections.
